Thermae Bath Spa is offering a £7,500 commission to produce 9 works which will be installed in the busy restaurant in September 2019. Thermae welcomes approximately 285,000 visitors through the building per year. Thermae are looking for work that is inspired by the natural thermal waters and promotes holistic wellbeing.
Britain’s original natural thermal Spa
For thousands of years, people have bathed in the natural thermal waters of Bath. The hot springs are a wonderful, natural resource which deliver over one million litres of mineral-rich water every day. Uniquely in the UK, the mineral water is hot and contain over 42 different types of minerals.
According to legend, Prince Bladud first discovered the thermal waters around 863BC when he was cured from his skin disease – his statue still watches over the Cross Bath today! The waters are a key reason for Bath being designated by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site and being credited as one of the Great Spas of Europe. Indeed, the word SPA is related to the Latin phrase ‘Salus Per Aquam’ or ‘Health through Water’.
In the heart of the World Heritage Site, Thermae Bath Spa is a remarkable combination of ‘old and new’ where historic spa buildings blend with the contemporary design of the New Royal Bath.
Thermae Bath Spa is open all year round. By day and by night, you can bathe in the natural thermal waters of the indoor Minerva Bath and the open-air rooftop pool from where you can enjoy spectacular views over the skyline of Bath. Additionally, you can refresh your senses in the new Wellness Suite, choose from over 30 spa treatments and sample delicious food in the Springs Restaurant.
